It had a lot of different versions, be it remakes or remasters, but the fan-translation patch for the PC version is very easy to find. The original Visual Novel, and the one I would recommend the most to begin with. I'll try to summarize things, though tl dr : Read Fate/Stay Night, watch Fate/Zero, do whatever you want then.įor future reference, there are three routes in F/SN. If you've decided you're a big dumb Fate fan after all that then you can pick up Fate/hollow ataraxia and Fate/Extra. If you want more I'd recommend looking up the all-ages versions of the Fate/stay night scenarios for the PC and their respective fan translations. It's also easy to watch legally without any fuss, so that's nice too. My recommendation: Watch the Fate/Zero anime to start out with, as it's the only genuinely good Fate work available in English and you won't have to put up with the butchered English of the novels' fan translation. Don't watch this unless you've played through F/SN and are at least familiar with the Tsukihime cast (either from Tsukihime or from Melty Blood). Lots and lots of naked little girls.Ĭarnival Phantasm: A spinoff anime that adapts chapters from a Type-Moon centric manga featuring characters from F/SN and Tsukihime. Prisma Illya: A spinoff for lolicons, contains stuff that will probably get you arrested in some countries. There is a fan translation underway for CCC, but expect it to take forever. Fate/Extra CCC sounds a lot cooler than the first game but Aksys never released it. Overall though the game is kinda boring unless you're a big Fate fan to begin with. The translation is pretty good, probably the "best" translation of Fate material in existence that isn't anime subtitles. Although the voice acting is still in Japanese, meaning that battle dialogue is entirely untranslated since there's no subtitles during fights (this actually has the effect of making boss battles harder, since some enemy dialogue will indicate that they're about to do something). The translation is also sorta bad.įate/Extra: The first game was released in English by Aksys and has a pretty good translation. The version in English is a fan translation of the PC version, so there aren't any voices as of yet (there's a project to patch them in but that won't be done for a long time). The main plot is actually pretty good for a fandisc and it has a good deal of cool and funny stuff in it. Pick this up unless you've finished the original work in its entirety and want more stuff with the main cast. Unless you can read Japanese I would recommend the anime over the novels, as the novel translation is complete trash.įate/Hollow Ataraxia: A "fandisc" for F/SN. The only really faithful adaptation so far worth checking out would be the recent Unlimited Blade Works anime from ufotable, but I haven't actually watched it yet.įate/Zero (novel and anime): The only 100% "actually good" iteration of the Fate franchise that's fully available in English. The first scenario, Fate, is mostly pretty boring. If you liked those, check out some of the billions of spinoffs.įate/stay night (game and anime): The second and third scenarios, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel, are both good.

Deen's 2006 adaptation of the Fate route is in that "good unless you've played the original in which case it's garbage" zone, while Deen's UBW movie is just plain bad. Requires a high tolerance for loli fanservice.Īs far as anime adaptations of the original VN are concerned- the only one that's considered to be remotely good by fans of the original is the recent ufotable adaptation of the Unlimited Blade Works route.

Prisma Ilya takes place in an AU from the other games and starts out as a fairly generic magical girl anime/manga that features Fate characters but gradually becomes less Magical Girl-ey and more Fate-ey as the series progresses.

Hollow Ataraxia is a quasi-sequel to Stay Night- much more light-hearted and takes place in a weird continuity that doesn't fallow any FSN ending.įate/Extra is a spinoff/AU PSP game- I never finished it, but it's decent if you're a fan of the other games. Every Fate sequel/prequel/spinoff except the anime adaptations of the original game assumes you know everything about the original game, including the major plot twists, so you should start there.Īs far as the others, from what I've played/seen/gathered: While Zero, being a prequel, is obviously spoiled by Stay Night, Zero spoils way more about Stay Night than Stay Night spoils about Zero. Hell, play Stay Night before consuming any other Fate-related media. Play Fate/Stay Night before reading/watching Fate/Zero.
